Aum Shinrikyō’s sarin attack on the Tokyo subway in March 1995 left an indelible mark on Japanese society. This book is the first comprehensive study of the competing memories of Aum Shinrikyō’s religious terrorism. Developing a sociological framework for how uneven distributions of power and resources shape commemorative processes, this book explores how the Aum Affair developed as a ‘cultural trauma’ in Japanese collective memory following the Tokyo attack. The book shows how numerous stakeholders, including the state, the mass media, public intellectuals, victims, and perpetrators offered competing narratives about the causes and consequences of Aum’s violence. Combining multiple methods including media content analysis, participant observation, and original interviews with victims and ex-members, this book reveals various flashpoints of contention such as the state regulation of religion, ‘brainwashing’ and ‘mind control’ controversies, and the morality of capital punishment. It shows that although cultural trauma construction requires the use of moral binaries such as ‘good vs.. evil’ and ‘sacred vs.. profane’, the entrenchment of such binary codes in commemorative processes can ultimately hinder social repair and reconciliation.

Black Women’s Stories of Everyday Racism puts literary narrative theory to work on an urgent real-world problem. The book calls attention to African American women’s everyday experiences with systemic racism and demonstrates how four types of narrative theory can help generate strategies to explain and dismantle that racism. This volume presents fifteen stories told by eight midwestern African American women about their own experiences with casual and structural racism, followed by four detailed narratological analyses of the stories, each representing a different approach to narrative interpretation. The book makes a case for the need to hear the personal stories of these women and others like them as part of a larger effort to counter the systemic racism that prevails in the United States today. Readers will find that the women’s stories offer powerful evidence that African Americans experience racism as an inescapable part of their day-to-day lives—and sometimes as a force that radically changes their lives. The stories provide experience-based demonstrations of how pervasive systemic racism is and how it perpetuates power differentials that are baked into institutions such as schools, law enforcement, the health care system, and business. Containing countless signs of the stress and trauma that accompany and follow from experiences of racism, the stories reveal evidence of the women’s resilience as well as their unending need for it, as they continue to feel the negative effects of experiences that occurred many years ago. The four interpretive chapters note the complex skill involved in the women’s storytelling. The analyses also point to the overall value of telling these stories: how they are sometimes cathartic for the tellers; how they highlight the importance of listening—and the likelihood of misunderstanding—and how, if they and other stories like them were heard more often, they would be a force to counteract the structural racism they so graphically expose. This book contains selected peer-reviewed chapters that cover novel information on cognitive disorders and updated information on dementias written by international researchers. In this project, we discuss the effect of metabolic disorders on the development of cognitive disorders in patients with type 1 diabetes mellitus. In another chapter, the authors highlight the usability of an assistive software application developed for patients with dementia. On the other hand, an extensive review of novel information on different types of dementia is made. This chapter covers the novel aspect of dementia without ignoring its foundation. Therefore, apart from classic issues that cannot be missed in any textbook about cognitive disorders, we introduce updated information on the commonest dementias. The current situation of the prisoner population with dementia in a correctional setting is analyzed in another chapter, and specific recommendations to improve the health outcomes for prisoners are delivered. In more than one chapter, our authors wrote about a copious microtubule-associated protein (tau) as a biological fluid biomarker and tauopathies leading to cognitive disorder and cancer. Finally, the role of the hypothalamus in Alzheimer's disease is discussed. We look forward with confidence and pride to the remarkable role that this book will play for a new vision and mission.

In diesem Open-Access-Buch geht es um die Frage, ob Emotionsregulationsprobleme eine Bedeutung für die Depression im höheren Erwachsenenalter haben. Depressionen sind in dieser Altersgruppe weit verbreitet, werden aber häufig nicht adäquat behandelt oder sogar als Teil des natürlichen Alterungsprozesses hingenommen. Ein Grund liegt in dem geringen Wissen um diese Erkrankung. Aus anderen Altersgruppen wissen wir, dass Regulationsprobleme mit Depressivität assoziiert sind. Im höheren Erwachsenenalter ist dieser Zusammenhang nahezu unerforscht. Um diese Lücke zu schließen, wurden Menschen im höheren Alter mit und ohne Depression untersucht. Das Ergebnis: Bei gesunden älteren Menschen hatte Regulationskompetenz einen positiven Einfluss auf das Wohlbefinden und war sogar Schutzfaktor gegen Depressionen. Patient:innen in klinischer Depressionsbehandlung profitierten im Hinblick auf den Outcome ihrer Behandlung ebenfalls von höherer Regulationskompetenz. Allerdings spielte Akzeptanz hier eine überraschende Rolle. Die Untersuchung liefert Hinweise, dass die Förderung emotionaler Kompetenz auch im Alter ein wirksamer Baustein psychotherapeutischer Behandlung sein kann.

Ist der Lernerfolg wesentlich vom bereits erworbenen Vorwissen abhängig oder nicht? Lernen besonders interessierte Zeichnungsleser besser als weniger interessierte? Kann ein geeignetes Feedback während des Lernprozesses wirksam platziert werden? Gibt es Ziele, die sich gegenüber anderen als erfolgsversprechender antizipieren lassen? Es ist vorstellbar, dass diese Fragen von unterschiedlichen, am Lernprozess beteiligten Personen (wie beispielsweise Lehrerinnen und Lehrer) aus verschiedener epistemologischer Überzeugung heraus konträr beantwortet werden würden. Vor diesem Hintergrund werden den Leserinnen und Lesern im Rahmen der vorliegenden empirischen Untersuchung Evidenzen zu einer angemessenen Argumentation in dieser Debatte präsentiert.

In Fake News, Werbetexten und Aussagen von Wissenschaftsleugnern finden sich häufig ähnliche Argumentationsmuster. Bei diesen handelt es sich um sogenannte 'logische Fehlschlüsse', also ungültige Argumente. Beispiele bilden das Naturargument, das Traditionsargument oder die Scheinkausalität. Wird ein Standpunkt lediglich durch Fehlschlüsse untermauert, so kann dies ein Hinweis dafür sein, dass der Position eine faktenbasierte Grundlage fehlt. Um Lernende für diese Problematik zu sensibilisieren, wurde im Forschungsansatz des Design-Based Research das Unterrichtskonzept 'feil: Fehlschlüsse identifizieren lernen' entwickelt und erprobt. Lernprozesse und Lernergebnisse der Schülerinnen und Schüler wurden anhand von Videografien, Artefakten sowie im Rahmen eines Prä-Post-Designs erforscht. Das entwickelte Unterrichtskonzept führt Lernende an einen kritischen Umgang mit Argumenten heran. In vier aufeinander folgenden Phasen erarbeiten die Schülerinnen und Schüler relevante Fehlschluss-Typen. Dieses Wissen nutzen sie, um Argumente in lebensweltnahen Kontroversen anhand authentischer Materialien zu prüfen. Dabei üben die Lernenden, Fehlschlüsse in Instagram-Posts, in der Werbung, aber auch in ihrer eigenen Argumentation zu erkennen. Das Konzept richtet sich an naturwissenschaftliche Fächer ab der 8. Klasse. Durch den modularen Aufbau und die thematische Vielfalt der Lernmaterialien können Lehrkräfte Umfang und inhaltlichen Schwerpunkt der Unterrichtseinheit selbst bestimmen.

Allerdings wird ihre Lernwirksamkeit zunehmend kritisiert, da die weit verbreiteten engmaschigen Aufgabenstellungen kaum Anreize zur tiefergehenden Auseinandersetzung mit den fachlichen Inhalten der Physik enthalten. Während Einigkeit über die generelle Zielsetzung der Laborpraktika besteht, nämlich den Erwerb fachmethodischer Fähigkeiten, und es auch vereinzelt Ansätze zur punktuellen Weiterentwicklung dieses Veranstaltungsformates gibt, fehlt es an einem hochschulfachdidaktischen Diskurs, um eine evidenzbasierte Neugestaltung der Praktika zu begründen. Die Arbeit schlägt ein performanzorientiertes Kompetenzstrukturmodell für universitäres Experimentieren vor. Die Modellierung ist auf Basis der Analyse videografierter experimenteller Performanz (N ,= ,16) realisiert worden. Die Entwicklung der Dimensionen erfolgte unter Nutzung der qualitativen Forschungsansätze Dokumentarische Methode und Typenbildung. Das Modell ist anschließend multiperspektivisch geprüft worden. Perspektivisch kann das entwickelte Modell als Ausgangspunkt für die Präzisierung der Lernziele von Laborpraktika, die Entwicklung von performativen Leistungstests sowie für die Weiterentwicklung des Lehr-Lernformates Laborpraktikum genutzt werden.

Imagination will remain a mystery—we will not be able to explain imagination—until we can break it into simpler parts that are more easily understood. Explaining Imagination is a guidebook for doing just that, where the simpler parts are other familiar mental states like beliefs, desires, judgments, decisions, and intentions. In different combinations and contexts, these states constitute cases of imagining. This reductive approach to imagination is at direct odds with the current orthodoxy, which sees imagination as an irreducible, sui generis mental state or process—one that influences our judgments, beliefs, desires, and so on, without being constituted by them. Explaining Imagination looks closely at the main contexts where imagination is thought to be at work and argues that, in each case, the capacity is best explained by appeal to a person’s beliefs, judgments, desires, intentions, or decisions. The proper conclusion is not that there are no imaginings after all, but that these other states simply constitute the relevant cases of imagining. Contexts explored in depth include: hypothetical and counterfactual reasoning, engaging in pretense, appreciating fictions, and generating creative works. The special role of mental imagery within states like beliefs, desires, and judgments is explained in a way that is compatible with reducing imagination to more basic folk psychological states. A significant upshot is that, in order to create an artificial mind with an imagination, we need only give it these more ordinary mental states.

The aim of this book is to characterize a notion of type which will cover both linguistic and non-linguistic action and to lay the foundations for a theory of action based on a theory of types called TTR (a Theory of Types with Records). The book argues that a theory of language based on action allows us to take a perspective on linguistic content which is centred on interaction in dialogue and that this is importantly different to the traditional view of natural languages as being essentially similar to formal languages such as logics developed by philosophers or mathematicians. At the same time it will argue that the tremendous technical advances made by the formal language view of semantics can be incorporated into the action-based view and that this can lead to important improvements both of intuitive understanding and empirical coverage. In this enterprise we use types rather than possible worlds as commonly employed in studies of the semantics of natural language. Types are more tractable than possible worlds and give us more hope of understanding the implementation of semantics both on machines and in biological brains.

Based on the premise that a society`s sense of commonality depends upon media practices of political communitarization, this study examines how Hollywood was deployed during the Second World War. It shows that Hollywood responded to the crisis of democracy in the war by creating a new genre. Using an affective theory of genre cinema, it offers a new characterization of the relationship between politics and poetics in forming commonality.

The book takes a multi-disciplinary approach to explore the role national security intelligence agencies played in supporting national governments’ response to COVID-19. Spanning the ‘Five Eyes’ intelligence countries (UK, USA, Canada, Australia and New Zealand), this book offers the first cross-comparative analysis of what intelligence agencies need to focus on in responding more effectively to future emerging health and biological security threats risks and hazards post-COVID-19. The volume addresses three principal issues. First, it investigates what roles the Five Eyes intelligence communities played (along with other key stakeholders, such as public health agencies) in managing the COVID-19 pandemic. This is an open access book which explores phenomenology as both an exceptionally diverse movement in philosophy as well as an active research method that crosses disciplinary boundaries. Inductive Metaphysics (IM) is a comparatively new branch of metaphysics that justifies metaphysical principles by inductive or abductive inferences from empirical evidence, rather than by purely logico-conceptual considerations. This is the first volume to provide a representative picture of current research and debates in this branch of metaphysics. Metaphysics was traditionally conceived as a purely conceptual, a priori enterprise. Besides the traditional view, there has always been the opposite view of metaphysics as an a posteriori discipline, but it was not until the 19th century that an a posteriori understanding of metaphysics was turned into a philosophical program entitled "Inductive Metaphysics". The program of IM argues that premises in metaphysical arguments should rely on empirical data and that inductive and abductive inferences are legitimate methods in metaphysics. This volume explores IM as a continuously expanding and highly topical field of metaphysics with contributions in virtually all domains of the discipline. The chapters are divided into six thematic sections. It starts with a section on the increasing role of IM in the history of philosophy and in contemporary philosophy. The next section addresses the central role of the method of abduction for IM, followed by a section on the relation of IM to metaphysical accounts of grounding, explanation, and evidence, and a section on IM and the formation of concepts. The last two sections cover the applications of IM in physics and in the life sciences. Inhibitory control is a critical neurocognitive skill for navigating cognitive, social, and emotional challenges. It rapidly increases during the preschool period and is important for early cognitive development, as it is a crucial component of executive functioning, self-regulation, and impulsivity. Inhibitory control training (ICT) is a novel intervention in which participants learn to associate appetitive cues with inhibition of behavior. It is being considered a promising approach in the treatment of psychopathology and appetitive behaviors. Significant changes in social sciences often herald changes in legal theory, including in international legal theory. In light of the cognitive turn in social sciences, this volume seeks to explore the implications of this ‘turn’ for international legal theories. Cognitive and behavioural studies are making inroads into international law literature and international policy-making, yet their implications for international legal theory remain under-explored. The book aims to fill this gap by systematically analysing if, to what extent, and how insights gained from cognitive-behavioural sciences influence the principal theoretical approaches to international law. The chapters indicate that while insights drawn from cognitive and behavioural literature often underlie or complement some international legal theories, interactions between some legal theories and cognitive-behavioural studies are characterized by tensions. Exploring the implicit and explicit cognitive-behavioural assumptions of international legal theories has the potential to build bridges between these fields.

In Knowing Subjects, Barbara Simerka uses an emergent field of literary study-cognitive cultural studies-to delineate new ways of looking at early modern Spanish literature and to analyze cognition and social identity in Spain at the time. Simerka analyzes works by Cervantes and Gracían, as well as picaresque novels and comedias. Employing an interdisciplinary approach, she brings together several strands of cognitive theory and details the synergies among neurological, anthropological, and psychological discoveries that provide new insights into human cognition. Her analysis draws on Theory of Mind, the cognitive activity that enables humans to predict what others will do, feel, think, and believe. Theory of Mind looks at how primates, including humans, conceptualize the thoughts and rationales behind other people's actions and use those insights to negotiate social relationships. This capacity is a necessary precursor to a wide variety of human interactions-both positive and negative-from projecting and empathizing to lying and cheating. Simerka applies this theory to texts involving courtship or social advancement, activities in which deception is most prevalent-and productive. In the process, she uncovers new insights into the comedia (especially the courtship drama) and several other genres of literature (including the honor narrative, the picaresque novel, and the courtesy manual). She studies the construction of gendered identity and patriarchal norms of cognition-contrasting the perspectives of canonical male writers with those of recently recovered female authors such as María de Zayas and Ana Caro. She examines the construction of social class, intellect, and honesty, and in a chapter on Don Quixote, cultural norms for leisure reading at the time. She shows how early modern Spanish literary forms reveal the relationship between an urbanizing culture, unstable subject positions and hierarchies, and social anxieties about cognition and cultural transformation.

Diese Publikation widmet sich dem Erwerb von Lesekompetenzen in der Fremdsprache Französisch bei Schülerinnen und Schülern mit und ohne (Schrift-)Sprachstörungen in der dritten Primarstufe. Die Längsschnittstudie liefert empirische Evidenz für Unterschiede in verschiedenen Teillesekompetenzen zu Beginn des frühen Fremdsprachenunterrichts. Das für die Datenerhebung entwickelte Screening, dessen empirische Validierung und die Berechnung von Strukturgleichungsmodellen zur Überprüfung von Einflussfaktoren auf die Lesekompetenzen in Französisch werden präsentiert. Die Forschungsresultate zeigen, dass der Leseerwerb in der Fremdsprache Französisch von den hierarchieniederen Lesekompetenzen in der Erstschriftsprache Deutsch und den Erwerbsmechanismen auf kognitiv-linguistischer Prozessebene beeinflusst ist. Die Unterschiede in den Teillesekompetenzen sprechen für eine frühzeitige Überprüfung des Lernstandes und gezielte Fördermassnahmen, die in der Publikation skizziert werden.
